HISTORY & CHARACTER

A capital with many layers

Tirana became Albania’s capital in 1920. The Clock Tower recalls an earlier city, while the bunker museums tell a more difficult story of dictatorship and state surveillance. The Pyramid, built in 1988, and the public spaces around Skanderbeg Square show how the capital continues to change. These different layers sit close together, giving a first visit both history and everyday city life.

Get to know the city

The square and Clock Tower form a central reference point. Pazari i Ri brings in market life; the boulevard, Pyramid and Blloku extend the picture southward. The park and Bunk’Art 1 offer different experiences beyond the central landmarks.

Skanderbeg Square

Tirana’s main square brings together the Skanderbeg monument, civic buildings and a changing skyline. Its open public space is a useful place to understand the scale and character of the capital.

The early 19th-century Clock Tower stands beside the Et’hem Bey Mosque near the central square. Together, they show an older layer of Tirana among its newer buildings.

Pyramid of Tirana

Built in 1988, the Pyramid is one of the city’s distinctive landmarks. Its reuse as a cultural and technology space reflects a capital still reshaping buildings from its recent past.

Dëshmorët e Kombit Boulevard

The boulevard gives central Tirana a broad urban axis, with public buildings and open spaces along it. The Pyramid belongs to this part of the city’s architectural story.

Blloku

Once reserved for the communist elite, Blloku is now a neighbourhood of cafés, restaurants and bars. Its mix of history and social life makes it a different side of Tirana from the main square.
